Keynote Speaker Doug Fisher: Rigorous Reading
Rigorous Reading: The 5 Access Points for Accessing Complex Texts
Emphasizing student learning versus task completion, this workshop demonstrates how a quality instructional model increases student learning and rigor in the classroom. Using the 5 access points for accessing complex texts, outlined in Rigorous Reading, educators will apply the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) framework to their instructional practice. The workshop will also highlight in-depth use of the GRR model with focus lessons (modeling), guided instruction (scaffolding), collaborative learning (productive group work), and independent learning (homework, spiral review, extension). Participants will:

  • Examine 5 access points and how they relate to quality reading instruction
  • Learn the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) Instructional Model
  • Understand the three components of text complexity—qualitative, quantitative and matching readers with texts and tasks—and learn to choose appropriate complex texts for their students.

Books That Extend Beyond a Mini-Lesson: Exploring Reading-Writing Connections with Culturally Diverse Texts
Have you found yourself in a book? You know, have you seen yourself in the pages you're reading? Maybe the character looked like you or experienced a similar situation you've had. Whatever the connection, we all deserve to see and hear ourselves in the books we read! Come explore quality literacy lessons that incorporate culturally diverse texts that work to foster student voice and agency. This session will explore the use of diverse texts to promote cultural efficacy within a school community. The texts shared, in both English and Spanish, have been used in our Reader's and Writer's Workshop for core lesson and to promote student identity, student voice, and student agency. Some of the lessons included stem from the work of Sara K. Ahmed's text, Being the Change (published by Heinemann). Throughout the session, participants will have a chance to explore books that showcase various cultures and communities. It is my hope that students see themselves and others in the books we share in our classrooms!
